The last time Sherman Holmes joined us at MusicFest was in 2010 when he performed with his dearly departed Holmes Brother bandmates, Wendell Holmes and Popsy Dixon along with musical Diva Joan Osborne.
Over their distinguished career, The Holmes Brothers became one of the most important, prolific, and musically distinct groups in the history of Funky Blues and R&B. They recorded with Van Morrison, Peter Gabriel, Odetta, Phoebe Snow, Willie Nelson, Freddie Roulette, Rosanne Cash, Levon Helm and, of course, Joan Osborne, and have gigged all over the world—including performing for President Bill Clinton. They won the Blues Music Award from the Memphis-based Blues Foundation for Band of the Year in 2005 and for the Soul Blues Album of the Year in 2008. The Holmes Brothers became one of Canadian Festival scenes Festival favourites, having graced the stages at one time or another at most of our most respected Festivals.
Popsy and Wendell both passed away in 2015 and that huge loss plus the recent pandemic could easily have been enough for Sherman Holmes to simply retire from sharing his music. A lesser person would be satisfied to have been in one of the most important groups in the history of American music!
Lucky for us, that isn’t the case as Sherman continues to put out stunning albums and tour around the world with various stunning musical collaborations.
We are thrilled to welcome Sherman Holmes back as part of our Family South gathering and can’t wait to see what he offers us musically this time around.
