“Though they are far from the Mississippi hill country and the delta, they have absorbed the blues sounds from these distant sources. Unlike those who flaunt their skills and totally miss the feeling, these artists have done intense listening and are not afraid to leave the sounds spare, as the original artists do; they make room for the listener’s emotions to become part of the song. These two women have it going on!”
Robert Gordon – Emmy and Grammy Award-winning filmmaker and Blues historian.
The Blue And Gold is a musical collaboration between Juno nominated and WCMA Blues ‘Artist Of The Year’ Ndidi O and folk-roots guitarist / banjo player Trish Klein (The Be Good Tanyas, Frazey Ford, Po’ Girl) which celebrates the musical artistry and legacy of pioneering female Blues musicians.
The Blue And Gold began during the pandemic winter of 2020 as a remote recording / research project exploring the lives and music of under-recognized female blues artists, this inspiring musical journey led to creation of their debut record. The album is a musical homage to the profound influence of Black female artists on 20th century country / blues traditions and indeed on the evolution on all modern music; 11 songs recorded with authenticity, soulfulness and grit, including reinterpretations of the works of pioneering female artists Memphis Minnie, Lottie Kimbrough, Victoria Spivey, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and others, as well as one song by the legendary Indigenous songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie.
