The Gertrudes

Banjo picker, Annie Clifford, had a dream about The Gertrudes. She told guitar picker, Greg Tilson, about the dream and he picked up the phone and called up all The Gertrudes in her dream. The Gertrudes then assembled themselves in a practice room at the Kingston School of Music, and made beautiful music together. The rest, as they say, is history.

Despite only getting together in January 2008, The Gertrudes have already been featured on three compilation CDs: “Friends of Skeleton Park” (Apple Crisp Records 2008), together with Juno Award winners Sarah Harmer and Jenny Whiteley; “Lake Ontario Waterkeepers” (2009), produced by Chris Brown and showcasing environmental anthems by Pete Seeger, Old Man Luedecke, The Sadies, and Gord Downie, and “Apple Crisp” (2009), a collection of Kingston’s best in new music. The Gertrudes have also been a feature band on CBC’s Bandwidth and Canada Live.

They released their second EP, HARD WATER, with Sarah Harmer and in collaboration with Lake Ontario Waterkeeper at the Wolfe Island Music Festival on Friday August 7th 2009.

“The Gertrudes sound like an ol’ time saloon party in deep space… experimental noise beds with down home folk passengers, frolicking through original material, played by a veritable orchestra of instruments. Nerdgrass?  maybe…
