Faranuka
Faranuka is an elementary school Marimba Band that was created in the music room at Valley View Elementary School in Courtenay. This creative, high energy group under the direction of music teacher Jen Turner is very versatile. They play traditional marimba music from Zimbabwe, Jamaica, Mexico, the Caribbean, as well as their favourite cover tunes.
These performers started learning basic Marimba in grade three, and their musical skill and ensemble work has improved dramatically over the years. In March 2010, as a class project, they recorded a CD of their favourite music entitled, “Dancing With the Hippos”. Their love of performing and sharing their music is truly evident in their dynamic musical performances, as well in their choice of name.
The meaning of the word Faranuka in the Shona language of Zimbabwe is to “be happy”. The students are extremely honoured to be playing at their hometown Festival, sharing their love of music, and marimba with all.
