It’s been a long day after a short night after a long evening. Vancouver Island Music Fest does this to me: burns me out while making me feel thoroughly wonderful!
I’ve spent the past 36 hours or so working intensely on social media stuff around VIMF (#vimf for all you folks posting to Flickr, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc.). The best part though has been working my fave social media: face-to-face interactions. My son David’s been a great help with this. He’s 14 and a little shy, so he’s on the camera most of the time. Once in a while, though, I get him in front of the camera. He’s interviewed a few people: his uncle Chris, his sister Mati (it’ll be posted later), his friend Rae Falcon. He’s watched me just launch into convos with folks I’ve never met and pull out a positive exchange. Most people want to engage. I’m pretty happy that I’m learning this just shy of turning 50; I’m hoping he – at 14 – is going to ‘get it’ way way earlier. Life is just so much more fun when I’m talking with folks.
I’m realizing that this social media stuff really is about getting more connected with folks. With this perspective, I’m looking at lots of new ways to get to chat with people. “Body art” is the latest. I’ve given myself the project at VIMF to document tattoos, piercings, paintings, etc – pretty much any kind of adornment or manipulation/mutilation of the body. It’s a call for attention; so I return the call. And almost everyone has a little (or large!) story to tell about their bit o’ bodyart_vimf (that’s how I’m tagging it on Flickr, in case you ‘re looking there).
Anyway, the days and evenings have been pleasurably and exhaustingly long (many, many body artists out there to talk to! many festival goers to interview! ….. and many digital files to deal with afterwards), and it’s time for me to pick up my son at the Linc and get him home to bed. And then bed for me too!
More tomorrow…. hpm.
